DENVER | The Cherry Creek boys tennis team played on another level than anybody else during the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament, but Regis Jesuit made a case for itself among the best of the rest.
Coach Laura Jones’ Raiders had three doubles teams in action during Saturday’s placing rounds at the Gates Tennis Center and though they went 1-2, they secured enough points for the team to realize its goal of a top-four state finish.
Regis Jesuit’s No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Steven Bummer and junior Truett Davis lost to Cherry Creek’s Teller Hoskins and Ben Schlichting 6-0, 6-3, but the Raiders’ duo weren’t the only ones to fall victim to the Bruins, who swept all three singles and all four doubles championships on their way to 98 points.
The 6-3, 6-2 victory of Regis Jesuit freshman Luca Abbott and junior Alec Jotte in the No. 4 doubles third-place match brought Regis Jesuit’s point total to 22, good enough to put it fourth behind Cherry Creek, Fairview (73) and Mountain Vista (46) and ahead of Chatfield (20) and Fossil Ridge (19).
Abbott and Jotte finished their season with just one loss, a semifinal defeat at the hands of Cherry Creek.
Regis Jesuit’s No. 2 doubles team of junior Joey Robertson and sophomore Tommy Koszowski battled Fossil Ridge’s Kevin Schultz and Trevor Swambom toe-to-toe in third-place match, but the SaberCats eventually prevailed 6-4, 7-5.
The most encouraging part about the tournament for Jones was the fact that her three placing doubles teams included three juniors, two sophomores and a freshman.
The Raiders expect to return next season minus only the No. 1 doubles team of seniors Timmy D’Costa and Nate Root and with senior-to-be Enzo Abbott healthy again as he seeks to regain the No. 1 singles position.
