Boys Tennis: Raiders No. 4 doubles duo makes state semifinals

DENVER | As the No. 4 doubles team, Noah Warren and Joe Robertson are used to being on the last to play for the Regis Jesuit boys tennis team.

On the first day of the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament at the Gates Tennis Center, the last turned out to be first.

Warren and Robertson were the lone Raiders to advance to the semifinals, as they won an epic three-set match from Arapahoe in the quarterfinals. The Regis Jesuit takes on Cherry Creek’s Gifford Mellick and Harshil Dwivedi in the semifinals, which are scheduled for 9 a.m., with both teams seeking a spot in Saturday’s championship match.

The Raiders’ other three first-round winners — freshman No. 2 singles player Chanon Penvari, the No. 2 doubles team of Jeremy Warren and Steven Bummer and the No. 3 doubles duo of Truett Davis and Alec Jotte — all went down to defeat in the quarterfinals, but have hopes of getting brought back into the playback bracket for third place if the team they lost to wins in the semifinals.

Penvari won a three-set match in his state debut, but Cherry Creek veteran Connor McPherson stopped him in the quarterfinals with a crisp 6-2, 6-1 victory. Bummer and Jeremy Warren also went down in straight sets, as Arapahoe’s Chad Curd and Michael Vartuli triumphed 6-0, 6-2.

Davis and Jotte took Grand Junction’s Matthew Prinster and Brian List to three sets by winning a second-set tiebreaker, but eventually ended up on the losing end of a 6-1, 7-6, 6-3 decision.

The No. 1 doubles team of Nate Root and Tim D’Costa were eliminated when then Mountain Vista team they lost to in the first round fell to Legacy’s Dave and Mike Rosencrans — who played the past two seasons at Smoky Hill — in the quarterfinals.

Trace Collins at No. 3 singles also saw his tournament end when Legend’s Monroe Porter, who topped in an opening match, went down to defeat.
