Boys Tennis: Five championships help Regis Jesuit net Western Slope Invitational team title

GRAND JUNCTION | Traveling to Grand Junction for the Western Slope Invitational proved quite fruitful for the Regis Jesuit boys tennis team.

When play wrapped up for the two-day tournament at the Elliott Tennis Center and Canyon View Park Saturday, coach Laura Jones’ Raiders racked up 183 points to top a quality field of 16 teams from schools on the Western Slope and metro area.

Regis Jesuit doubles teams swept the championships at all four positions and senior Max Koszowski made it a fifth winner at No. 2 singles as the Raiders just outdistanced Heritage (179) and Chatfield (174) for the team crown.

Koszowski — who won a Class 5A state championship with junior Luca Abbott at No. 4 doubles, but moved all the way up to the No. 2 singles spot this season — knocked off Heritage’s Jack Alexander 6-2, 6-2 in a key head-to-head championship matchup between the top two teams.

Abbott also claimed a Western Slope Invite title with new partner Patrick Seby at No. 2 doubles. The Raiders’ duo nearly blanked Chatfield’s Zac Meyer and Elliot Takaki, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Senior Steven Bummer, who has moved up to No. 1 doubles from the No. 3 spot, where he played for a state championship last season, teamed with former No. 3 singles player Erich Nuss for a straight set victory.

Regis Jesuit’s No. 3 duo of Kosta Garger and Evan Nuss and the No. 4 tandem of Will Dennen and Matt McCarthy also needed just two sets to win their titles.
