In the pool or on the wrestling mat, Jonathan Askew aims to be the best at whatever he does.

That falls in line with the Rangeview senior’s hope of a career in the military with the Marines. Askew narrowly missed qualifying for the Class 5A state wrestling tournament in the winter.

As a junior, Askew helped the Aurora Public Schools co-op boys swim team based at Hinkley win last season’s EMAC championship and is a strong leader as a senior. He carries a 3.7 GPA.

All of our overnight meets.

What’s the biggest sacrifice you have to make to play your sport?

During swim season, I eat and drink all healthy foods to stay healthy.

What’s the best piece of advice ever given to you in sport or life?

To be the best, you have to train harder than the rest.

Are you a leader? If so, what do you think makes a good leader?

Yes. To set a high standard and pushing everybody else to reach or pass that standard.

Do you have any quirks or superstitions when it comes to your sport or life in general?

I have to pray before any meet.

If you listen to music before a game, what gets you most ready for competition? If not, how do you get focused?

I just focus on how much I need to win and how failure is not an option.

What’s a sport you’ve always wanted to try, but haven’t and why haven’t you?

Hockey. It looks really fun, but I just never have had the chance to.

If you could pick a person living or dead to spend a day with, who would it be and why?

Cael Sanderson (former Iowa State star), because he was the greatest wrestler ever with a 159-0 career record in college.

Other than sports, do you have another true passion in life and if so, what is it and why?

The Marines is another passion of mine. It’s always been my dream to be in the military and fight for something important. The Marines are the best of the best.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

Being an officer in the military and ordering my platoon into action.
