AURORA | Although it takes place indoors, Saturday’s Smoky Hill Invitational boys swim meet is affected by the weather outside.
In order to speed up the meet in the face of expected rain or snow, Buffs coach Scott Cohen said the meet would change format from a prelims/finals meet — which was originally scheduled to be begin at 8:30 a.m. with finals at 5 p.m. — to a timed finals event.
Racing begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs through to the completion of the events, with the diving competition to follow swimming.
Thirteen teams are scheduled to compete in the meet, with Cohen’s Smoky Hill team and Cherokee Trail representing Aurora in a field that also includes Broomfield, Chatfield, Denver East, Douglas County, Heritage, Highlands Ranch, Liberty, Littleton, Monarch and Ponderosa.
The Buffaloes finished one point ahead of Ponderosa for second place at last season’s meet behind Fossil Ridge, the runaway winner with 602 points. The SaberCats — who aren’t in this season’s meet — went on to win the Class 5A state championship.
Cherokee Trail finished fifth last season.
Senior Aidan Mercer is the defending champion in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke and Cherokee’s Eric Lammon won last season’s title on the diving board.
