LITTLETON | With less than a few of its main swimmers in the water, the Regis Jesuit boys swim team managed to finish second at the Continental “A” League Championship meet at Heritage High School.

Coach Nick Frasersmith’s Raiders picked up five new qualifiers for the Class 5A boys state swim meet from Friday’s prelims and they picked up 542 points in Saturday afternoon’s finals to come in three points ahead of Heritage for second place behind the Highlands Ranch co-op team, the runaway winner with 818 points.

Regis Jesuit comes away with a contingent of 25 swimmers and a diver (junior Nick Mordini), plus a full compliment of relays, headed for the 5A boys state swim meet May 20-21 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

At the league meet, the Raiders’ best individual result came from Mordini, who finished second in the diving competition with a score of 372.90 points, while freshman Evan Brega added a fourth place finish.

Freshmen Luke Baldwin and Joel Orloff finished fourth and fifth in the 500 yard freestyle, followed by senior Trevor Bruckman in sixth for the most successful event for Regis Jesuit, which also got championship finals appearances from junior Evan Benke (200 individual medley), sophomores Chris McAninch and Matthew Nguyen (200 freestyle) and freshman Sean Zoellner (100 backstroke).

Regis Jesuit finished fourth in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays and had just enough points to outlast Heritage for second despite taking a disqualification from its 400 freestyle relay.

Pysche sheets for the 5A boys state swim meet are expected to come out Tuesday.
