GREENWOOD VILLAGE | The fastest boys swimmer in the 100 yard backstroke ever at the Cherry Creek High School pool came back even faster.

Almost exactly a year to the day after he set the facility standard in the event — which he went on to win at the Class 5A state meet a few weeks later — Grandview junior Oliver Schimberg topped himself in the recordbooks Saturday during the championship final of the John Strain Memorial meet.

Schimberg blazed to the wall in a time of 49.03 seconds to not only win the event by more than two seconds, but set the meet and pool record in addition. He bettered his own time of 49.59 from last season’s meet, while he also knocked former Cherry Creek star Darryl Turner out of the top spot in the recordbook.

Turner had the previous meet mark with 49.08 set back in 2012.

It was the highlights of an outstanding day for Schimberg, who led off a 200 yard medley relay team that finished in second place, then battled cramps at the end of the championship final of the 100 yard butterfly that saw him finish second.

Immediately after he finished the backstroke, Schimberg swam the leadoff leg of the 400 yard freestyle relay in 49.57 seconds to take down a team record for the 100 freestyle held by former Grandview star and current assistant coach James Boone.

Senior Evan Higgins got the Wolves to the wall in second place in the 400 freestyle relay to help cement a fourth-place team finish for coach Dan Berve’s team.
