FORT COLLINS | Every state championship victory is fun for Mike Doherty, and the Regis Jesuit swim coach got to enjoy himself at the Class 5A boys state swim meet for the 17th time in the past 18 years.

Doherty’s Raiders had three individual and two relay state champions and piled up 381 points in the final day of competition Saturday at the Edora Pool & Ice Center, continuing a reign of dominance in the sport that is verging on two decades.

Junior Clark Smith won his third consecutive 100-yard butterfly championship, senior Ben Fry defended his crown in the 50 freestyle and freshman diver Kyle Goodwin all climbed atop the podium for Regis Jesuit, which also won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The 400 relay team of Smith, Fry, junior Erik Biernat and sophomore Hennessey Stuart put the finishing touches on the meet by holding off Cherry Creek and powerhouse Darryl Turner — who set multiple state records in two days of state competition — to set the Colorado state record of 3 minutes, 4.91 seconds. Fry and Clark also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay, which also included juniors Grayson Magruder and Zach Suter.

Goodwin and sophomore Matt Mauser went 1-2 on the diving board and a slew of other Raiders scored in multiple events in the runaway victory.

Smoky Hill finished with 61 points, with senior Steven Holiday finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke and scoring in two finals events. Overland piled up 12 points on the 7th place diving finish of senior Jamie Corona, Grandview’s seven points came courtesy of Triston Mosby and Hinkley picked up six with the 500 freestyle performance of junior Brandon Barocio.
