THORNTON | Hennessey Stuart knew who he was up against for the Hoyt Brawner Award, which made him even more surprised when he won it.

The Regis Jesuit standout was selected from among eight outstanding nominees as the top senior swimmer/scholar in the state and received the award during the final session of Saturday’s Dick Rush Coaches Invitational at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center.

Smoky Hill’s Derek Liu was also nominated for the award.

It was a big day for Stuart, who overcame an illness that hit him and the rest of his team late in the week to contribute to the meet-opening 200 yard medley relay team’s victory along with brother Quinlan, Chris Morales and Will Pieseski.

Stuart — who is headed to swim at North Carolina State next year — went on to win the 100 yard backstroke for Regis Jesuit, which posted 301 points to handily win the 5A portion of the multi-classification meet.
