LITTLETON | The Regis Jesuit boys swim team finished second at the Continental “A” League Championships and further stocked its numbers for the upcoming Class 5A state swim meet.
Competing without the majority of its standouts, coach Nick Frasersmith’s Raiders still racked up 615 points and had eight new swimmers record times that got them into the May 16-17 5A state meet at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center by the time the league meet wrapped up Saturday at Heritage High School.
Junior diver Kyle Goodwin and junior Ethan Stanley won individual Continental “A” League titles for Regis Jesuit, the 2013 league champions, which finished behind Highlands Ranch (695 points) and in front of Heritage (458) among six teams competing.
The Continental League diving competition took place at Littleton High School, where Goodwin — the two-time defending 5A state champion — won handily.
Goodwin posted a score of 530.90 points to break his own pool record of 527.25 set the previous season. It was also the highest score for a Colorado diver in any classification so far this season.
Senior teammate Matt Mauser racked up 466.75 points to finish second in diving, while freshman Nick Mordini placed eighth in an event that yielded 63 points for the Raiders.
Stanley, meanwhile, turned in a time of 59.62 seconds in the final of the 100 breaststroke to win the event by nearly two seconds.
Junior Ben Fortuin qualified for the state meet in the 100 backstroke with his time of 56.02 seconds in the prelims, but bettered it in the final with a 55.62 to place second.
Shawn Byrne posted top-four finishes in both the 50 and 100 freestyles and also earned his trip to the state meet, as did Tristan Thomas (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Cameron Weese (200 IM), Alexander Strepman (50 freestyle), Andy Hoffman (100 butterfly), Alex Baldwin (500 freestyle) and Eric Gardiner (100 breaststroke).
