THORNTON | The gap closed a bit this season, but the Hinkley boys swim team still managed to win the East Metro Athletic Conference championship for a third straight season.

Coach Beth Himes’ co-op team — made up of swimmers from schools around the Aurora Public Schools District — held off Northglenn/Thornton by just two points when the two-day meet wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center.

The Thunderbirds had two individual champions in senior Tim Martin in the 100 yard breaststroke and diver Eustace Oakley and finished in the top three of all three relay events to piled up 473 points, two more than the Northglenn/Thornton team with 471. Brighton wasn’t far behind, either, with 462 points at the meet contested in the same pool where the 5A state meet will take place May 16-17.

Five EMAC meet records were established in the finals session, including the time of 1 minute, 2.90 seconds posted by Martin in winning the breaststroke. Martin also finished second in the 200 individual medley and helped the 200 medley relay team to a runner-up finish and the 400 freestyle team to a third.

Oakley posted a score of 265.85 points to win the diving title and later collected the EMAC Diver of the Year award. His coach, Dominic Butts — a former Overland diver — was selected EMAC Dive Coach of the Year.

Steve Banuelos-Loya (second in 100 breaststroke, third in 50 freestyle), Andy Stockinger (third in 200 freestyle) and Jebb Askew (third in 100 butterfly) all posted at least one top-three finish for Hinkley, which came away from the meet with three new state qualifiers as well.
