THORNTON | Aurora firmly cemented itself as breaststroke capital of Colorado in Friday’s prelims of the Class 5A boys state swim meets.

Of the eight open slots in Saturday’s 2 p.m. finals session at Veterans’ Memorial Aquatic Center, six of the championship finalists in the 100 yard breaststroke will represent Aurora schools, making a state championship in the event a virtual formality.

Aurora swimmers also make up half of the championship final of the 200 yard freestyle and between Regis Jesuit, Cherokee Trail, Grandview and Smoky Hill, will have a combined 45 swims in championship or consolation finals.

Seeking its 19th 5A state championship in the past 20 seasons, Regis Jesuit made a strong showing in the prelims, as 12 of its 18 individual swimmers qualified for at least one championship or consolation final and the 200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle relays each clocked the best times.

Senior Hennessey Stuart broke his own Colorado record in the 100 yard backstroke with his time of 46.91 seconds and also finished three seconds clear of the nearest competitor in the 200 individual medley.

Regis Jesuit junior Quinlan Stuart led the Aurora charge in the 100 breaststroke with the top time, while teammates Theodore Koerner and Nicholas Birney joined him. Other city swimmers in the finals include Cherokee Trail senior Josh Bedford, Grandview senior Triston Mosby and Smoky Hill sophomore Aidan Mercer.

Seniors Chris Dawson and Austin Phillips and junior Mitchell Bruckman qualified for a pair of championship finals for coach Nick Frasersmith’s Raiders, while Mosby and junior James Boone made a pair each for Grandview, a feat matched by Smoky Hill’s Juhan Hong.

All three Regis Jesuit relays finished in the top three in prelims, while Smoky Hill will have a team in the consolation finals of all three events as well. Grandview’s 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams each swam the fifth-fastest times in the prelims, the same position as Cherokee Trail’s 200 medley relay team.

The prelims and semifinals of the diving competition are slated to begin at 9 am., with Regis Jesuit expected to get another boost from the duo of junior Kyle Goodwin — who will look to win a third straight 5A state championship — and senior Matt Mauser.
