DENVER | The Regis Jesuit boys soccer team’s outstanding season ended with a 2-1 loss to Broomfield in a Class 5A state quarterfinal match Nov. 10 at All-City Stadium.
The sixth-seeded Raiders — who returned a large contingent of players from a team that lost on PKs in the semifinals in 2023 — hadn’t lost to a team in Colorado and got off to a great start toward another win when senior Charles Sharp scored nine minutes into the match with the third-seeded Eagles.
Senior Sebastian Campos assisted on Sharp’s goal, his fourth in three postseason games, but Broomfield managed to net the equalizer in the 25th minute in the aftermath of a free kick attempt. A clearing attempt ended up in the vicinity of senior Adam Thresher, whose shot from near the top of the box got past diving Regis Jesuit goalkeeper Thayer White.
The teams remained in a 1-1 stalemate into the 55th minute when the Eagles got a free kick opportunity and senior Arshia Khodaee pinged a left-footed shot off the inside of the far post and into the net.
With just over two minutes left, junior Hugh Brophy banged a shot that hit the crossbar and junior Colin Manion volleyed the rebound towards the net, where Broomfield senior goalkeeper Evan Kulstad secured it for one of his nine saves.
Coach Rick Wolf’s Regis Jesuit team — which suffered its only other loss of the season to Rockhurst Sept. 21 at the Jesuit Classic — finished 14-2-2. The Raiders’ win total included a 4-1 playoff win over Erie in the second round in a game in which Sharp scored twice, while Rocco Berg and Stefan Zehnacker also tallied (story, here).
Regis Jesuit moves into next center and will have replace some large losses due to graduation.
Forward Jack De Simone led the Raiders in scoring with 24 goals and had a team-best 59 points, while Sharp finished with 19 goals and 19 assists (57) points. Campos (8 goals, 3 assists), Zehnacker (6 goals, 7 assists) and Berg (3 goals, 7 assists) also registered double digit points. Regis Jesuit will also have to replace multi-year starter White in the nets, as well as defenders Reed Garcia and Everett White.
Broomfield advanced to a Nov. 13 semifinal matchup against second-seeded Boulder at 7:30 p.m. at CIBER Field at the University of Denver, which will follow a 5 p.m. contest between No. 1 Northfield and No. 4 Cherry Creek. The Nov. 16 5A state championship game got moved from Weidner Field in Colorado Springs to 2 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
