WESTMINSTER | The Grandview boys soccer team contributed significantly to an upset-filled opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs Wednesday night.
The 22nd-seeded Wolves were one of four teams seeded No. 19 and below in the 32-team field that knocked off higher seeded opponents, as they took down 11th-seeded Legacy 2-1 in overtime at the North Stadium.
Senior Dominik Fedotov tallied the golden goal five minutes into the first extra session to give the Grandview program its first postseason win since the first round of the 2024 playoffs. Coach Greg Watts’ Wolves advanced to a 7 p.m. Nov. 3 second round clash with No. 6 Ralston Valley (9-4-3), who won 3-0 over No. 27 Boulder, at the North Area Athletic Complex.
Junior Luke Vonhof had the other goal and senior Garrett Revercomb was credited with an assist for Grandview (10-5-1), while sophomore keeper Jazy Perez Pena stopped five of the six shots he face from the Lightning (9-4-3).
Aurora area teams finished 2-2 on the opening night of the 5A state playoffs, as Grandview joined No. 5 Regis Jesuit — the defending state champion — with victories as the Raiders downed No. 28 Fossil Ridge 4-1. No. 32 Overland challenged No. 1 Legend on the road before falling by a goal, while No. 31 Rangeview got shut out at No. 2 Valor Christian.
