COMMERCE CITY | Eaglecrest coach Greg Watts was confident his team would beat No. 1 Adams City Monday, but he couldn’t have dreamed about how it unfolded.
Watts’ 17th-seeded Raptors exploded for five goals in the second half, building off it’s one-goal advantage after the first half and finishing off an 6-0 victory at Adams City that reshaped the Class 5A boys state soccer tournament.
Reserve Yonas Mammo put Eaglecrest on its upset path with a score late in the first half and two goals by Michael Prichard and one apiece by Creede Wheeler, Omar Sandoval and Armando Perez propelled the Raptors on to Saturday’s quarterfinals, where they will face a familiar foe in Centennial League rival Cherry Creek. The ninth-seeded Bruins advanced with a 1-0 victory over another league power, Arapahoe.
Senior striker Symon Fabbricatore had three assists and drew a penalty kick that Prichard converted and sophomore goalkeeper Blend Avdili made six saves as Eaglecrest pitched a shutout against Daniel Devora and high-powered Adams City, which was shut out for the first time since the semifinals of last season’s playoffs and ended its season 14-1-2.
A rugged season facing foes in the Centennial League helped the Raptors — who blanked No. 16 Mountain Vista in the first round — go into their match with the East Metro Athletic Conference champions without a trace of intimidation.
Warding off an early push by Devora and Adams City’s fast-paced offensive attack, Eaglecrest began to dig in and get more comfortable with its own ability to pressure.
The coveted first goal finally came for the Raptors when midfielder Austin Marques chipped a ball forward to a streaking Mammo, who punched it just over the head of Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Ontiveros, who could only turn and watch as the ball ticked off the goalpost and rolled in with just 2:03 left in the first half.
It was Mammo’s first goal of the season and it was huge for the visitors.
Watts braced his team for an expected push by Adams City coming out of the halftime and it came, as Devora had a number of close calls for the equalizer, but the next goal went to Eaglecrest 12 minutes into the half. Fabbricatore streaked up the left edge of the field and with two defenders closing on him slipped a sneaky cross in the middle to Wheeler, who finished for a 2-0 lead.
Devora again tried to answer, just missing the near post with a screaming liner, getting stuffed on a free kick attempt from just outside the goal box and pinging the far post on the run before the Raptors again found the back of the net on a counterattack.
Fabbricatore again created with his speed on the wing, this time finding Sandoval for the finish.
Prichard had position in front of the goal on a free kick and Fabbricatore fed him in perfect position for a point blank goal and a 4-0 advantage with just 14 minutes left.
Seconds later, Fabbricatore earned a penalty kick when he was taken down on the edge of the goal box, with Prichard finishing that shot as well and prompting Watts to clear his bench.
Perez added the sixth and final goal when his long shot snuck over Adams City replacement goalie Ernesto Galvin.
