Boys Soccer: Another game-winner for Gillis as Smoky Hill nets shot at 5A state title

AURORA | It seems like every time a Smoky Hill boys soccer game comes to a close, Jeff Gillis has his shirt off.

For the second time in four games in the Class 5A playoffs, the senior striker scored the clinching goal and ripped off his jersey in celebration.

Gillis converted on a penalty kick to finish Rangeview in the second round, but scored in the run of play 4 minutes and 37 seconds into overtime Wednesday night, lifting the fourth-seeded Buffaloes to 1-0 victory over No. 9 Cherry Creek in a semifinal contest at Legacy Stadium.

The next time Gillis will have a chance for a game-winner will be in the 5A state championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids. It will be Smoky Hill’s first trip to the state final since 2007.

Coach Kersten Mullan’s Smoky Hill (15-1-4)  team will take on No. 6 Boulder a 1-0 overtime winner over No. 10 Fairview in the nightcap of a semifinal doubleheader at Legacy Stadium.

It is Boulder’s first trip to the 5A state title game.
