Boys Soccer: Top-seeded Smoky Hill hammers Westminster 7-1; Aurora Central, Cherokee Trail fall

AURORA | Smoky Hill looked every bit the part of the top seed in the Class 5A boys state soccer tournament Thursday with a decisive 7-1 victory over Westminster at the Swamp.

The Centennial League champion Buffaloes (14-2) racked up six goals in the second half to break open a 1-1 tie against the 32nd-seeded Wolves and rolled into the second round, where they will face No. 17 Fort Collins, which posted a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Ralston Valley.

Junior Kevin Del Mazo scored four goals, senior Tyler Glenn had two and junior Zach Clemons tallied the other for Smoky Hill, which got two assists from junior Walter Prince and one each from Clemons, James Grinage and Cam Joseph.

(21) STANDLEY LAKE 3, (12) AURORA CENTRAL 2

AURORA | Standley Lake came to town and left with a first-round 5A state playoff victory, as the 21st-seeded Gators posted a 3-2 upset of No. 12 Aurora Central Thursday afternoon.

The Trojans (11-4-1) fell behind early against Standley Lake before knotting it up at 1-1 at halftime.

The Gators scored twice in a short span in the second half, however, and withstood Aurora Central’s attempt to rally. The Trojans got another goal in the late stages, but fell short of getting the equalizer to fall in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season.

Standley Lake advanced to the second round where it will play fifth-seeded Grandview at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Legacy Stadium. The Wolves moved into the matchup with a 4-0 victory against No. 28 Hinkley in the first round.

(9) BOULDER 5, (24) CHEROKEE TRAIL 0

BOULDER | Cherokee Trail’s first trip to the 5A state playoffs last just round, as the 24th-seeded Cougars became the latest victim of red hot Boulder.

The ninth-seeded Panthers — last season’s 5A state champions — came into the game at Recht Field with eight straight shutouts in tow and extended that streak to nine in a row against Cherokee Trail, which saw its season end at 7-6-3.

Matteo Wilczak scored twice for Boulder, which got goals from four different players to advance to a second round matchup against eighth-seeded George Washington, a 1-0 winner over No. 25 Fossil Ridge.
