AURORA | With a relentlessness coach Kersten Mullan hasn’t seen from her Smoky Hill team as often as she’d like in the Class 5A boys state soccer playoffs, the Buffs routed Abraham Lincoln Thursday to open the 2014 postseason.

Junior Nathan Kauffman recorded his first varsity hat trick, seniors Sam Franceschi and Walter Prince scored two goals apiece and seven different Smoky Hill players found the back of the net in all in a game that ended with 5 minutes, 35 seconds, remaining by the 10-goal mercy rule.

Senior Kevin Del Mazo assisted on five of the 11 goals, Prince added three helpers and senior Daniel Beccera had a goal and a pair of assists as the second-seeded Buffaloes rolled over the 31st-seeded Lancers 11-1 at The Swamp and moved into the 5A round of 16.

Smoky Hill (14-2) is set to play host to No. 15 Ralston Valley — a 3-1 winner on No. 18 Denver East — at 4 p.m. Oct. 29.

Lincoln’s lone goal came on a free kick chance by Jovany Herrera in the 55th minute.
