Boys Soccer: Grandview stopped by Pine Creek in 5A quarterfinals


COLORADO SPRINGS | In the only quadrant of the Class 5A boys state soccer bracket went according to seeding, fifth-seeded Grandview fell to No. 4 Pine Creek Saturday with a berth in the semifinals on the line.

Upsets have abounded in this season’s parity-filled tournament, as the 5A Final Four includes the No. 19 seed (Denver East) and the No. 9 (Boulder), but Pine Creek and Grandview advanced to the quarterfinals without incident, though both had one-goal wins among their victories in the first two rounds.

When the teams met at District 20 Stadium, it was the Eagles that prevailed thanks to a goal in the seventh minute by Nic Bannister that held up. Pine Creek advanced to play Boulder — the defending 5A state champion — at 5 p.m. Nov. 6 at Legacy Stadium.

All three of the losses for coach Brian Wood’s 14-3-1 Grandview team came by 1-0 counts.

The Wolves managed just five shots on goal.

Grandview’s loss put Aurora completely out of the playoffs, as all seven teams that qualified have been ousted.
