Boys Soccer: Grandview starts strong early, holds off Hinkley to open 5A playoffs

AURORA | The Grandview boys soccer team understands how much focus it will take to win the Class 5A state championship and the Wolves were razor sharp Thursday night in their playoff opener.

Fifth-seeded Grandview (13-2-1) scored first in its all-Aurora matchup with 28th-seeded Hinkley at Legacy Stadium and floored the gas pedal the rest of the way for a 4-0 victory.

Rhys De Sota, Aaron Higa and Eduard Shevchuk scored first-half goals for coach Brian Wood’s Wolves, who got their fourth from Alex Simpson early in the second half on their way to the second round. They will face No. 21 Standley Lake, which upset No. 12 Aurora Central 3-2 in the opening round, in a contest tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at Legacy Stadium.

Jorge Rangel racked up two assists and Zach Huff and Adam Riasati also had helpers for Grandview, which advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2011 when it lost to Heritage 3-2.

Coach Kevin Daly’s Hinkley team finished the season 8-7-1.

The Thunderbirds lost in the first round of the playoffs for the third straight time, also falling in the opening round in 2011 and 2009, when they also lost to Grandview.
