Boys Soccer: Grandview needs overtime, but kicks Standley Lake out of 5A state playoffs

AURORA | The team with the great chances doesn’t always win in the Class 5A boys state soccer tournament.

Grandview coach Brian Wood feared that his fifth-seeded team might fall into that category after Wednesday night’s 5A second round contest against No. 21 Standley Lake at Legacy Stadium.

Wood was please to be proven wrong, as Bryan Tanner netted the game-winning goal on an assist from Eduard Shevchuk seven minutes into overtime to send the Wolves — who generated far more chances than the Gators all game long — into the 5A quarterfinals.

Grandview, the only Aurora team to advance after top-seeded Smoky Hill and third-seeded Rangeview fell victim to upset, now plays at fourth-seeded Pine Creek on Nov. 2 in a 5A quarterfinal contest.

Score by halves:

Standley Lake  0   0  0 — 0

Grandview        0  0  1 — 1

Grandview goal: Bryan Tanner.
