GREENWOOD VILLAGE | Looking to run out the clock on a big Centennial League victory, Jorge Rangel couldn’t resist another shot.

On a day like the Grandview boys soccer team had Tuesday, it was worth taking.

Rangel’s shot found nothing but net, marking his second goal in a six-minute span at the end of the game, and put the exclamation mark on a rare 4-1 blowout win over Cherry Creek at Village Green Fields.

Senior Alex Simpson and freshman Rhys De Sota also had goals for Grandview, which rebounded from its first loss of the season — a 1-0 defeat to Montbello — to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial League.

Coach Brian Wood’s Wolves finally got the best of the Bruins, who beat them 3-1 last season, 2-1 in 2011 and 4-0 in 2010.

Simpson gave Grandview the lead in the 5th minute when he finished a pass from Jake Smith and the Wolves kept the 1-0 advantage until De Sota headed in a cross from Ian Cerro midway through the second half.

Cherry Creek responded with its lone goal just a minute later, however, as Andre Rojas headed in a cross to make it 2-1.

The Bruins continued to press, but the Wolves soon regained their composure and got some breathing room when Rangel put a shot across the goal mouth that got past Cherry Creek goalkeeper Christian Accame.

Grandview withstood another brief Cherry Creek charge and looked to work the ball outside and run down the clock, but Rangel saw daylight in the 78th minute and ripped a shot in the net.

Rangel’s two-goal performance upped his total on the season to four, which gives him the team lead along with Smith, who also leads the team with three assists.
