GREENWOOD VILLAGE | Max Smith picked the perfect time for his first goal of the season.

The Regis Jesuit senior midfielder’s opportunity came with just over four minutes left in Wednesday night’s showdown with Cherry Creek, a rematch of last season’s Class 5A state championship game.

Smith found himself with a clear path the Bruins’ goal and he took advantage, with his first score of the young campaign giving the Raiders a three-goal lead. Regis Jesuit needed every bit of that margin to survive Cherry Creek’s late really for a 13-12 victory at Stutler Bowl.

Junior Jake Taylor scored five goals — three in the second half — and Reed Babcock and Grant Breeden scored twice for coach Jim Soran’s Raiders, who moved to 3-0.

Senior Anders Erickson contributed three assists.
