AURORA | Blake Knobloch got himself into a bad position in the closing seconds Saturday, but lifted his Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team into a prime spot.
The senior midfielder got the ball with time running out in a tied Class 5A state quarterfinal game against rival Mullen at Lou Kellogg Stadium, then managed to keep possession while running through a gauntlet of defenders before launching a shot that rippled the back of the net with just three ticks remaining.
Knobloch’s goal, his 29th of the season, pushed the third-seeded Raiders past the sixth-seeded Mustangs and into the 5A semifinals.
Regis Jesuit will face Arapahoe in one semifinal on May 15 at Denver’s All-City Stadium, while Cherry Creek and Kent Denver play in the other. Games times have yet to be determined.
Sophomore Chase Konkel scored twice and Ben Bechter, Alec Barnes, Aaron Horvat and Chet Dunstan also talied for coach Jim Soran’s team, which avenged a 9-8 double-overtime loss to Mullen in a snowstorm on March 22.
