Boys Lacrosse: Regis Jesuit rolls past Denver East to reach 5A state quarterfinals

AURORA | The defending Class 5A boys lacrosse state champions began the postseason in fine form in Wednesday’s first round.

Second-seeded Regis Jesuit exploded for 10 goals in the second period and eased past No. 15 seeded Denver East at Laber Field to earn its way into Saturday’s quarterfinal round.

Senior Matt Soran racked up five goals and senior Ben Bechter notched a hat trick and two assists to help push the Raiders to a fourth straight lopsided win following a loss to undefeated Cherry Creek. Coach Jim Soran’s team takes on seventh-seeded Monarch — which downed No. 11 Monarch 15-14 in overtime — at 3 p.m. at Legacy Stadium in the quarterfinals.

The string of four straight quarterfinal games — which used to be played at Regis Jesuit, but is moved to Legacy Stadium this season — begins with No. 8 Rock Canyon vs. No. 1 Cherry Creek at 9 a.m., followed by No. 12 Castle View against No. 4 Kent Denver (which knocked out Grandview) at 11 a.m. and No. 11 Arapahoe against No. 3 Mountain Vista at 1 p.m.
