AURORA | With big goals ahead, the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team opened the Class 5A state playoffs impressively Wednesday evening.
The second-seeded Raiders scored the first seven goals of the game and overwhelmed No. 15 Chaparral in a 13-3 victory at Lou Kellogg Stadium to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals on the same field.
Chet Dunstan tallied five goals and Ben Bechter added four for Regis Jesuit, which improved to 15-1 and is set to face 10th-seeded Mullen, an 8-6 upset winner over No. 7 Columbine. Alec Barnes, Truett Davis, Simon Quan and Matt Soran added goals for the Raiders.
Four quarterfinal contests are slated for Saturday, with the Raiders and Mustangs — who also met in last season’s quarterfinals — are expected to play in the 9 a.m. time slot. Regis Jesuit topped Mullen (8-8) 13-5 when the teams met in the regular season.
The quarterfinals are rounded out by matchups between No. 8 Rock Canyon (11-5) and No. 1 Cherry Creek (13-3) — the lone team to beat Regis Jesuit this season — No. 5 Colorado Academy (13-3) vs. No. 4 Kent Denver (11-4) and No. 6 Arapahoe (11-5), the defending state champion, against No. 3 Mountain Vista (14-2).
