AURORA | The Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team wasn’t able to “scrub away” all of the remnants of last season’s embarrassing playoff loss to Arapahoe, but they felt noticeably cleaner after Saturday’s rematch.
Though it was just a regular season contest, the Raiders in part expunged the memory of one-sided 13-5 defeat to the Warriors with a crisp 16-8 victory at Lou Kellogg Stadium.
Junior Chase Konkel scored five goals, junior Chet Dunstan added four goals and a pair of assists and junior goalie Brett Quartuccio and his defense did an extraordinary job against an explosive Arapahoe attack with the exception of a third-period flurry as Regis Jesuit extended its unbeaten opening to the season to 8-0.
Konkel notched the first goal of the game just 1 minute, 7 seconds after the opening faceoff and the Raiders never trailed in the game, building a five-goal lead by halftime.
A big key to Regis Jesuit’s start was the play of sophomore Alec Barnes, who won his team plenty of possession time with his work on faceoffs and twice in the first two periods took the ball coast-to-coast for a goal.
Dunstan scored his first goal with 6 seconds left in the second period to send the Raiders into the break with a 9-4 advantage and added another 1:28 into the third period to make it 10-4.
Arapahoe grabbed the momentum from there to make it a game, as the Warriors reeled off four straight goals to creep within 10-8 roughly midway through the period. Regis Jesuit’s Matt Soran broke Arapahoe’s streak with a goal with less than two minutes left and Ben Bechter pushed the lead back to four with another tally in the closing minute.
Konkel and Dunstan each scored a pair of goals in the fourth period to push the Raiders’ goal total to 16.
