Boys Lacrosse: Regis Jesuit eases past rival Kent Denver in playoff tune-up

DENVER | The pressure is still on the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team going into this season’s Class 5A state playoffs in light of its championship victory last season, but it’s lessened a lit bit lately.

An 8-4 loss on April 18 to Cherry Creek, which is currently top-ranked and undefeated, gave the Raiders a chance to reset and refocus for the upcoming postseason with the spotlight shifting primarily to the Bruins.

Playing loose and playoff-ready in a variety of areas of the game, Regis Jesuit raced past rival Kent Denver for a 12-4 road win on April 29 in its season finale. Paced by three goals from Matt Soran and a two-goal, three-assists showing from Chase Konkel, the Raiders (13-2) locked up the South Suburban League championship and likely the No. 2 seed in the 5A postseason.

Though veteran coach Jim Soran emphasized his team had plenty of things to work on — and was especially not pleased with Regis Jesuit’s lack of a killer instinct in the third period — the performance displayed the type of offensive depth and defensive ability that can win in the postseason.

The Raiders took the lead on Truett Davis’ goal — the lone score in a fast-moving first period — and never trailed, building the lead to seven goals (9-2) at the break.

Though Regis Jesuit’s lead increased by a goal in the third period, Jim Soran was disappointed in the lack of finishing that sent the game into the final period at 11-3.

Long stick middie Adam Kratt scored a rare goal on the break to up the advantage to nine and Kent Denver got only two of the goals back before the final horn.
