LITTLETON | The defending Class 5A state champion Regis Jesuit boys golf team opened the new season with a second place finish Thursday in the first Continental league tournament of the season.

Six players shot in the red numbers at the par 72 Deer Creek Golf Club and two of them were Raiders in Drew Anderson and Walker Fuller, who each carded 3-under 69s to tie for second individually.

Regis Jesuit finished with a four-golfer team total of 8-over 296, same as Highlands Ranch, with both teams finishing seven strokes off the torrid pace set by Rock Canyon. The Jaguars got an 8-under 64 from individual winner Jake Daniel and had a trio of players shoot even par for a team total of 289.

Anderson and Fuller had identical rounds, as both had seven birdies, seven pars and four bogeys and both handled the par-5 holes successfully, making birdies on all four of them.

The two Raiders returning from coach Craig Rogers 5A state winners last season — senior Tyler Zhang and junior Cal McCoy — shot 73 and 77, respectively.

Cameron Kirke shot 74 and Justin Markel added a 76 to round out Regis Jesuit’s scoring golfers.

The next Continental League tournament is scheduled for Aug. 18 at South Suburban G.C.
