Boys Golf: Zhang drops 68 to help Regis Jesuit win second straight Continental League tournament

LONE TREE | The Regis Jesuit boys golf team posted its second straight Continental League victory with a seven-shot win over Rock Canyon Monday at Lone Tree Golf Course.

Senior Tyler Zhang shot a scorching 4-under-par 68 to take individual honors for the Raiders, who also had senior Justin Markel tie for second with a 1-over 73. Senior Harry Woodward and sophomore Walker Fuller shot 76 and 79, respectively, to give Regis Jesuit a team score of 296 and put some distance between Rock Canyon (303) and Highlands Ranch (311).

The Raiders, who finished seven strokes behind the Jaguars in the first league tournament, then pulled even with a seven-stroke edge over Rock Canyon on Aug. 18 at South Suburban G.C. The margin is up to seven strokes going into the Aug. 29 league tournament at Spring Valley C.C.

Zhang helped widen the margin with his performance, despite making a bogey on the opening hole. He birdied No. 2 to get back to even and made the turn at 3-under. A birdie on the par-3 Hole No. 10 dropped to 4-under and Zhang got as low as 5-under with a birdie on No. 16. A bogey on the par-4 Hole No. 18 brought him in with a 68.

Markel made three birdies in his round, including two on his final four holes, to finish with a 1-over 73 and tie Rock Canyon’s Nick Caldwell for second place.

Woodward sat at plus-1 through 12 holes until a string of four straight bogeys between Holes No. 13-16 pushed him as high as 5-over. A birdie on the par-4 No. 18 dropped him to a 4-over for the day, good enough to tie for eighth.

Fuller — who shot a 69 in the season opening tournament — bogeyed his first three holes, but held it together to finish 7-over for the day.
