Boys Golf: Two Aurora players in four-way playoff Sunday to make 5A state tournament

FORT COLLINS | Two Aurora boys golfers don’t have to put away their clubs quite yet for the 2015 season.

Because organizers of the Class 5A Southern Regional tournament failed to have a playoff for first and second alternate following the conclusion of the Sept. 21 state qualifying tournament at Colorado Springs Country Club, four golfers — including Rangeview senior Raymond Simanjuntak and Smoky Hill freshman Christopher Kennedy — get a shot to earn their way into the state tournament in a four-way playoff Sunday.

The two Aurora golfers, plus Mountain Range’s Josh Thompson and Fruita Monument’s Nic Laubscher (who all shot 80 at regionals) tee off at 11:25 a.m. at Fort Collins Country Club — site of the 5A state tournament Monday and Tuesday — with the winner replacing a qualifier from the Southern Regional who dropped out.

Rangeview coach Merlin Johnson said Simanjuntak was “excited” about the chance to earn his way into state and become the first Rangeview boys golfer to do so since 2010, while a surprised Kennedy found out about his chance during Smoky Hill’s Homecoming pep assembly on Friday.

Kennedy’s teammate, senior Paul Cleveland, is one of 10 Aurora golfers already qualified for the state tournament. The rest of the field is made up of the Regis Jesuit team of seniors Andrew McCormick and Bennett Rogers, junior Tyler Zhang and sophomore Cal McCoy, the Cherokee Trail pair of senior Ji Woo Jang and junior Bradley Scalia, the Grandview duo of senior Mason Jowsey and junior Danny Taggart, plus sophomore Davis Bryant (Eaglecrest).

Freshman Sha Jefferson represents Vista PEAK in the 4A state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Fox Hill Country Club in Longmont.
