COLORADO SPRINGS | Smoky Hill’s Paul Cleveland continued his outstanding sophomore season by qualifying for the Class 5A boys state golf tournament, as he made it through the 5A Southern Regional Friday.

Cleveland — who earlier in the season recorded a hole-in-one that was the first seen in the Centennial League in 12 years or more — shot a 10-over-par 81 at the Colorado Springs Country Club, good enough to put him 13th individually.

Teammate Kyle Colen also qualified for the Sept. 30-Oct. 1 5A state tournament, which was relocated to Murphy Creek G.C. in Aurora due to flooding at CommonGround G.C. Colen had a nice late save from the sand and finished with an 83.

Cherry Creek cruised to the regional championship and earned an automatic team berth in the 5A state tournament, with Fossil Ridge claiming the second team spot. Fossil Ridge’s Brooks Hoffman won individual medalist honors with a plus-1 72.

Smoky Hill finished 10th in team standings, bolstered by the performances of Cleveland and Colen. The Buffaloes’ other two finishers — Jonathan Cook and Parker Friedentag — each checked in with 100s.

William Rohr led three Hinkley players with a 123.
