DENVER | A new-look Regis Jesuit boys golf team got off to a strong start to the new season at Tuesday’s opening Continental League tournament.
Playing on the historic Overland Park Golf Course — which is in remarkably good condition given the state’s drought conditions — coach Craig Rogers’ Raiders finished five over-par as a team to tie with ThunderRidge for the top team spot.
Only one player in Regis Jesuit’s lineup played at last season’s Class 5A state tournament in senior Will Farber and he made an outstanding debut with a 3-under-par 69 to earn a share of third place in the individual standings.
Farber opened on Hole No. 14 in the shotgun start and played in a group with senior teammate Christopher Smith, the top performer in tryouts. Farber made a birdie on his second hole and was off and running on a day in which he had six of them, including his final two holes to hold his spot on a tightly-packed leaderboard.
Smith finished just a stroke out of the top 10 individually with a plus-2 74 that put him alone in 11th place. His round included four birdies, including one on his final hole.
The third score for Regis Jesuit came from either senior Connor Houtsma or junior Tommy Hubbard, who both shot 78 to tie for 23rd. The Raiders had the lowest score for their fourth place, as both Houtsma and Hubbard were a stroke better than Grizzlies’ No. 4 Joey Schmitten, who shot 79.
The Continental League schedule continues with a tournament schedule for noon on Aug. 18 at Heritage Eagle Bend.
Regis Jesuit will have a different contingent of players entered in Wednesday’s Kent Denver Sun Devil Invitational scheduled to be played at Murphy Creek G.C.
