AURORA | The make-or-break round of the season is here for Aurora boys prep golfers, who compete in Class 5A regional qualifying tournaments Monday and Tuesday seeking berths in the upcoming state tournament.

Distributed by finish in league standings, the city’s 10 teams are spread out among four 5A regionals at various sites around the metro area.

First off the tee are Gateway and Grandview, which wound up in the 5A Western Regional set to begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Monday at Raccoon Creek G.C. in Littleton. The top two of the 13 teams in the field will automatically qualify for the Sept. 29-30 5A state tournament at Colorado Springs Country Club in addition to 13 individual players not on a team.

Also on Monday, Centennial League champion Cherokee Trail along with Smoky Hill represent Aurora in the 5A Southern Regional, scheduled for 11 a.m. at Wellshire Golf Course in Denver. The Cougars have one player looking for a return to the state tournament in sophomore Bradley Scalia, while a group that also includes junior Ji Woo Jang — the Centennial League medalist — and seniors Zach Goldsmith and Mitchell Nevin also seek to qualify.

On Tuesday, the largest contingent of city teams gathers for the 5A Central Regional at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

Teams opening with the 9 a.m. shotgun start include Continental League champion and four-time defending 5A state champion Regis Jesuit, which has only senior Jack Lazzeri back from last season’s title-winning squad, but new state hopefuls as well in seniors Kevin Shafer and John Kane and juniors Colton Bennett and Andrew McCormick.

Aurora Central, Eaglecrest — featuring freshman standout Davis Bryant — and Rangeview also play in the Central Regional.

Hinkley and Overland stay close to home in the 5A Northern Regional at Aurora’s Meadow Hills G.C.
