Boys Golf: Rangeview’s tradition continues with big EMAC South win at Springhill

AURORA | Playing Springhill Golf Course second instead of first, as usual, literally made no difference to the Rangeview boys golf team.

The Raiders opened last season with a score of 232 to win the first EMAC South Minor at Springhill and duplicated that score exactly on Thursday, though the tournament came after they opened with the first of two league major tournaments last week at Meadow Hills Golf Course.

Rangeview senior Raymond Simanjuntak posted the lowest score at Springhill for the third straight season with a 7-over-par 71 — which bettered his 72 last season and his 73 in 2013 — while sophomore Levi Robinson tied for second with a 79 and junior Jared Clanton checked in fifth at 82.

Coach Merlin Johnson’s Raiders finished 51 strokes clear of runner-up Gateway, which posted a team score of 283.

While the Raiders had the top five scores at last season’s Springhill tournament, Adams City’s Aaron Montoya and Gateway’s Luke Hemphill made sure that didn’t happen this time around.

Though Adams City finished fourth in the team standings, Montoya improved 34 strokes from last season to tie Robinson for second at 79. Hemphill shaved 10 strokes off his 2014 Springhill round with a 79 that put him fourth, while Joseph Miller shot 94 for coach Brian Dossey’s Olys.

Iojan Ledezma and Abraham Pizano each shot 100 to pace coach Larry Taylor’s Aurora Central squad to third, while Cleveland Gultom’s 101 led the way for fifth-place Hinkley.

The next EMAC South meet is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at Aurora Hills G.C.
