AURORA | The first of the fall prep sports to get underway ahead of the 2016-17 athletic season is boys golf, which opens with practice on Monday.

The 96th season of prep sports sanctioned by the Colorado High School Activities Association is just a few short weeks away for a large slate of sports — including football, volleyball, boys soccer, softball, cross country, boys tennis, field hockey and gymnastics — with boys golf getting off to the earliest start.

Golfers also open regular season play first with tournaments allowed to begin Aug. 11, four days before all remaining fall sports begin official practice. Boys tennis (Aug. 18) and softball (Aug. 19) begin to compete ahead of the rest of the sports, which officially start play on Aug. 25.

Six golfers who appeared at last season’s Class 5A boys state golf tournaments are expected to return, including senior Tyler Zhang and junior Cal McCoy from the Regis Jesuit team that captured the state championship.

Cherokee Trail senior Bradley Scalia, Grandview senior Danny Taggart, Eaglecrest junior Davis Bryant and Smoky Hill sophomore Christopher Kennedy also should be back for another season.

See the Aug. 11 edition of the Aurora Sentinel for a preview of the 2016 boys golf season for Aurora teams and individuals.
