Boys Golf: Eaglecrest’s Bryant takes early lead in Centennial League medalist chase in opener

COMMERCE CITY | Davis Bryant has big goals for the 2015 season and he took a step toward one of them Tuesday.

The Eaglecrest star sophomore’s aim to be the Centennial League medalist looked pretty strong in the first of five league meets on the season, which took place as part of the Cherry Creek Bruin Invitational at Buffalo Run Golf Course.

With his putter feeling excellent and enjoying a shorter course than he’s used to playing at 6,531 yards, Bryant shot a 3-under-par 69 to put himself four strokes in front of last season’s Centennial League medalist, Cherokee Trail senior Ji Woo Jang, who shot a 73 to finish second.

Grandview junior Danny Taggart carded a 75 to tie for fourth, with Smoky Hill’s Paul Cleveland a stroke back in a tie for sixth.

In the team chase, defending Centennial League champ Cherokee Trail led Aurora teams in the final standings, but came in fourth overall with a team score of 324.

Paced by their two returners from a team that finished seventh at last season’s Class 5A boys state golf tournament, Jang and junior Bradley Scalia — who shot 78 — coach Troy Flores’ Cougars find themselves down 17 strokes to team winner Arapahoe (307), which was followed by Cherry Creek (314) and Mullen (321).

Freshman Christopher Kennedy’s 81 helped Smoky Hill finish four strokes behind Cherokee Trail in fifth, while senior Mason Jowsey’s 82 supported Taggart’s lead score for sixth-place Grandview.

Eaglecrest’s second-best score came from junior Michael Milton with an 89 as the Raptors finished seventh, while Overland — playing its first league match under new head coach Casey Coy — took its lead from Mason Moore with a 103.

The next Centennial League tournament is scheduled for Aug. 25 at Aurora’s Fitzsimons Golf Course.
