AURORA | The Class 5A boys state golf tournament won’t be at CommonGround G.C., but it will stay in Aurora.

Forced to move the Sept. 30-Oct. 1 tournament from its previously scheduled home — which remains underwater in the aftermath of the massive flooding that hit the city last week — the Colorado High School Activities Association landed on Murphy Creek G.C. as the new site.

“We’re really fortunate that a number of golf courses stepped up to be the 5A site, understanding what happened to CommonGround,” CHSAA Assistant Commissioner Tom Robinson said in a statement Wednesday.

“What we’re praying for, really, is that CommonGround has a golf course when they get all the water pumped out of that area,” he added. “It’s more about CommonGround and can they survive this.”

The state site change is surely good news to Regis Jesuit senior Spencer Painton, who shot a 4-under-par 68 in the Central Regional Wednesday at Murphy Creek, where the Raiders cruised to the team title.
