AURORA | Despite a slow start, the Eaglecrest football team finally got into gear Friday night at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.
Coach Mike Schmitt’s undefeated Raptors found themselves trailing Rangeview 7-0 after one quarter, but responded with 48 straight points in the second and third periods on their way to a 48-7 victory in a matchup of the two Aurora programs in the Mount Wilson League.
Senior running back Kenny Wantings rushed for 143 yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries as Eaglecrest racked up more than 500 yards of total offense and moved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Mount Wilson play.
Senior quarterback Jalen Mergerson threw a touchdown pass to senior Corey Corbin and found senior Theryne Sandoval-Jimenez for 146 of his 211 passing yards and senior Victor Garnes invoked the running clock 40-point mercy rule with a long touchdown run in the late stages of the third quarter.
Rangeview (1-6, 0-2) drew first blood late in the opening quarter when senior quarterback Jaelin Odegard found senior Josh Hollins for a 33-yard touchdown pass, but that was all the points coach Brandon Alconcel’s Raiders could put up against a defense that has allowed the second-fewest points in all of Class 5A (69 in seven games).
Corbin intercepted two Odegard passes for the Raptors, who allowed just 189 yards of total offense.
Rangeview turns around to face the other Mount Wilson League leader, Ralston Valley (4-3, 2-0), in a 4 p.m. game on Oct. 19 at the North Area Athletic Complex, while Eaglecrest heads to Douglas County Stadium at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 to take on Castle View (1-6, 0-2).
