AURORA | The Vista PEAK and Rangeview football teams have played each other for the third time in the past five months — twice during the spring season (including playoffs) and in Thursday night’s season opener — and the end result has been the same.
The Bison earned a sweep of that three-game set with 32-14 Week 1 victory in front of a full-sized crowd at Aurora Public Schools Stadium, as they scored twice defensively and delivered a win to DaVaughn Thornton Sr. in his first game as head coach.
Junior Calem Moore scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown in the opening quarter and senior Christopher Marquez put an exclamation point on it with a 60-yard interception return for a score in the third quarter for Vista PEAK.
Senior quarterback Jordy Ruiz rushed for a touchdown and threw a scoring pass to Bryson Torrie as well and Ezekiel Taylor scored via the ground game for the Bison.
Rangeview — which tuned up for the game with a 52-7 win over rival Gateway in a Foundation Game a week earlier — got an initial boost on an interception from Michael Bufmack on Vista PEAK’s first drive, but a fumble on the subsequent possession turned into Moore’s touchdown.
Coach Mike Holmes’ Raiders trailed from there and finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Donavon Cooks rushed for a score and Kiaorie Stewart-Ricks connected with Tereaz Jackson Jones for a TD through the air.
Next up for Vista PEAK is a 7 p.m. Sept. 3 road contest at Falcon, while Rangeview plays host to Horizon at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2.
