AURORA | Three Aurora area teams opened the season with Week Zero contests and finished a combined 1-2, with the lone victory going to Grandview in a local matchup with Vista PEAK Prep Aug. 22.

The Wolves paid a visit to Aurora Public Schools to go against a Bison team that played its first contest with Kyle Reese as head coach. Grandview asserted itself early with a ground game that saw senior Chris Blanks rush for two touchdowns, while senior Blitz McCarty also threw a touchdown pass to sophomore Timothy Arnold III and junior Jaxson Flores took back a punt for a touchdown for a 28-7 lead at halftime.

McCarty finished with 245 yards passing and threw his second touchdown pass to senior Julian Savaloja in the fourth quarter, while sophomore Neelein Shead Jr. also rushed for a score for coach Tom Doherty’s team, which held off a rally from Vista PEAK Prep. Junior CJ Key Jr. rushed for a touchdown and seniors Canaan Barthlow (160 yards passing) and Isaiah Watson hooked up for a touchdown pass in the third quarter (and nearly had another) for the Bison.

On the opening day of the season Aug. 21, Regis Jesuit fell down 28-0 after one quarter to visiting Cherry Creek at Lou Kellogg Stadium and ended up with a 45-10 loss to the defending Class 5A state champions.

Coach Danny Filleman’s Raiders put up all their points on the scoreboard in the final two minutes of the second quarter, both courtesy of junior linebacker Sawyer Burruss. Burruss scooped up a fumble forced by Will Anzures and returned it for a touchdown and followed that with an interception that led to senior Jack Manthey’s field goal.

Junior Logan Singer also had an interception for Regis Jesuit.
