ENGLEWOOD | Few football teams beat Mullen twice in a long while.
Grandview has done it twice in roughly a calendar year, as the Wolves stunned the Class 5A No. 3 Mustangs 34-30 Friday night — matching its victory last season that snapped Mullen’s winning streak at 34 games.
Tanner Gentry hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Reece Weber with just 31 seconds left and the Wolves held on for their first-ever victory at de La Salle Stadium, which improved them to 2-2 on the season.
Running back Connor Brady had a huge game running the football with more than 260 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the losing effort for Mullen, which fell to 2-2.
Gentry had an 89-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter to put Grandview in front, but his second capped a drive engineered by Weber that went 80 yards in just 1:11.
After Sean Gelsey stopped Brady in the backfield on third down to force a Mustangs punt, the Wolves took over at their own 20 with only 1:41 remaining and no timeouts after they’d spent them all on Mullen’s previous offensive possession.
Three times on the final drive, Weber — who finished 15-for-25 for 260 yards and a pair of scores, in addition to a team-high 70 yards rushing — went to Gentry. He found the University of Wyoming-bound standout with a long pass along the sideline to put Grandview in scoring position, then threw a pass Gentry hauled in over his head in the corner of the end zone to put the Wolves ahead.
Gentry finished with 161 yards on seven catches.
