AURORA | Gateway’s uniforms weren’t the only thing that shone brightly Friday at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.

Sporting new bright orange jerseys, the Olys looked crisp from the opening kickoff in a 42-7 thrashing of Northglenn in their homecoming game.

Senior quarterback Tate Johnson threw two long touchdown passes to junior Anthony Holmes and ran for a score and seniors Nik Adams, Tory Adams and Lamont Lynch also rushed for touchdowns as coach Justin Hoffman’s Olys improved to 2-0 on the season.

Johnson threw for 170 yards on just six completions, with four going to Holmes for 135 yards, and the ground game racked up 256 more yards.

The Gateway defense, which shut out Smoky Hill in the opener, kept Northglenn (0-2) off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter when quarterback Jordan Radebaugh found Marcus Pando on an 18-yard touchdown pass.

The Norse — who rolled up 47 points in a victory over the Olys in 2011 — netted just 18 yards rushing and Radebaugh had 113 passing.

Gateway struck quickly, as a sack by senior Zack Golditch and fumble recovery by Jose Maruffo set the Olys up at the Northglenn 36 in the opening minutes. It took just three plays for Gateway to get on the scoreboard, as Johnson rushed 14 yards for a touchdown. The Norse were stuffed on a 4th-and-1 in their own territory on the next possession and the Olys scored in two plays on a 37-yard hookup from Johnson to a wide open Holmes.

The Olys took a 13-0 lead into the second quarter and kept their foot on the gas, as they scored four more times on a 41-yard pass from Johnson Holmes and rushing scores of 9 yards by Tory Adams and 1 yard by both Nik Adams and Lynch.

The Olys will play another team in its homecoming on Sept. 14, when they are at Cherokee Trail in a battle of Aurora teams off to 2-0 starts.
