AURORA | Less than a handful of upsets took place in the first round of the Class 5A state football playoffs, but Eaglecrest pulled off the biggest.

The 22nd-seeded Raptors rode the momentum from the previous week’s come-from-behind victory over Cherry Creek with a 29-7 dispatching of No. 11 Chatfield at Jefferson County Stadium, moving into the second round for the first time since the 2009-10 season and the first time under coach Mike Schmitt.

Quarterback Adan Soto threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, TreShawn Wilford caught three passes for 115 yards and a touchdown and Soto and Ryan Willey had rushing touchdowns as Eaglecrest improved to 6-4 and gave Schmitt his first playoff victory.

The Raptors also earned a home game for the second round, as they will play host to No. 6 Chaparral, a 43-3 winner over No. 27 Rock Canyon.

Eaglecrest’s win put Aurora teams at 4-3 through the first round of the state playoffs, as the Raptors joined No. 3 Cherokee Trail, No. 9 Grandview and No. 20 Regis Jesuit in the round of 16.
