LITTLETON | The Cherokee Trail football team showed for a second week in a row that it could put points on the scoreboard, following up a 35-point opener with 21 Thursday night against Columbine at Jeffco Stadium.

Unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to slow Columbine’s vaunted rushing attack, as the Rebels (ranked third in the Aug. 30 CHSAANow.com Class 5A poll) gained more than 500 yards and scored seven touchdowns on the ground on their way to a 52-21 victory over ninth-ranked Cherokee Trail in a matchup of teams that had been 1-0 coming into the game.

Senior quarterback Logan Brook — who threw five touchdown passes in the opening win for coach Joe Johnson’s Cougars over Mullen — added three more with two strikes to senior Jack Pierce and another to senior Gage Gordon.

Pierce’s touchdown catches (both in the first half) covered 59 and 3 yards, while Gordon hauled in a six-yard score in the second half.

Cherokee Trail plays host to the Far Northeast Warriors — the Class 5A state champion last spring — in a 7 p.m. Sept. 10 contest at Legacy Stadium in Week 3.
