GREENWOOD VILLAGE | The Wagon Wheel rolled back to Overland Oct. 20.
After a nearly scoreless first half, the Trailblazers eventually pulled away from Smoky Hill at Stutler Bowl for a 28-0 victory that brought the traveling trophy in the longstanding football rivalry back to Overland for another season.
A short touchdown run by senior Jaion Colbert broke a 0-0 deadlock with under two minutes left in the opening half and a long bomb by junior quarterback Jalon’e Rice set up junior Jermaine Davis’ score in the closing seconds for a 14-0 Overland halftime lead.
Coach Steve Sewell’s Trailblazers scored twice more on rushes from Vaejon Robinson and Rice to seal it.
Overland improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Mount Massive League, sitting a game behind league-leading Grandview, which is 3-0 in league play after a 42-2 road win at Doherty.
Smoky Hill fell to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the Mount Massive League.
