Football: Aurora Central rallies past Mountain Range to stay unbeaten

AURORA | Members of the Aurora Central football team made a stand before their game against Mountain Range Friday night, then they rallied at the end to get a thrilling Homecoming victory.

Several Trojans knelt during the playing of the national anthem as they indicated they would earlier in the week in protest to police violence across the country, following the lead of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and some other NFL players.

Once the game kicked off, coach Jamarr Kerney’s Aurora Central team saw its unbeaten record threatened as it faced a 7-0 deficit through three quarters, but senior quarterback Jalil Grimes tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the final period as the Trojans (4-0) prevailed 12-7 to remain one of four unbeaten teams in Class 5A.

Grimes, who finished with 229 yards of total offense (162 passing, 67 rushing), found fellow senior Jouan Kennedy with a 27-yard touchdown pass with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a missed extra point left Aurora Central down by one.

The Trojans regained possession in the closing minutes and with just 1:45 remaining, Grimes put them ahead with a 15-yard touchdown strike to senior Francisco Aranda to send the home crowd home happy.

Aurora Central — which joined Eaglecrest as Aurora’s only two 4-0 teams — has a rivalry game against Hinkley set for 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at APS Stadium.
