AURORA | The Lotus School for Excellence boys basketball team opened the coronavirus pandemic-shortened season with a 49-43 victory over Denver Academy of Torah Monday.

The Meteors — playing the first game of any in Season B for Aurora programs — got the majority of their scoring from behind the 3-point arc, as 10 of their 18 made field goals were triples, with five players making two apiece.

Junior Petros Tareka paced Lotus with 12 points, while junior Elias Dessalegn added 10 and seniors Kidus Begashaw and Zaid Eddeek added eight apiece.

Begashaw — the Class 2A boys state cross country champion in the fall — and junior Adani Hassan were credited with five assists apiece for coach Sami Jabai’s team.

Lotus is schedule to play host to Ellicott at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
