AURORA | The Gateway boys basketball team secured its best start to a season in more than a decade with Tuesday night’s 86-52 win over visiting Adams City.

The Olys held a comfortable lead for nearly the entire night against the Eagles and kept the energy up and the foot on the gas pedal on their way to a 6-0 start that eclipsed the 5-1 mark of the 2010-11 team as the program’s best recent mark after six games.

Senior Andres Arellano finished with 22 points, senior Erick Covington had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds — plus five of the team’s 23 assists — and Kaden DeVault (13) and Amin Ibrahim (10) also scored in double figures for coach Ibn Shabazz’s team, which is now 3-0 in EMAC play.

Gateway also topped Adams City 68-28 to open the season in a non-league meeting.

The Olys play at the Far Northeast Warriors (3-3) Wednesday night in a game that will give it the required seven games necessary to be eligible for the postseason.
