AURORA | Cherokee Trail boys basketball coach Morgan Gregory had to admit it, a double-digit lead early a postseason game felt pretty good.
There haven’t been many lopsided playoff contests for the Cougars with Gregory at the helm, but Wednesday’s Class 5A first round out turned out to be pretty comfortable for all involved in an 80-48 victory.
Eighteenth-seeded Cherokee Trail got off and running with the first 15 points of the game and kept the 45th-seeded Huskies (10-14) at bay the rest of the way as it moved into a Feb. 25 second round contest. The Cougars (13-11) head to play No. 15 Rampart (17-6) at 1 p.m.
Senior Jaizec Lottie poured in 12 of his game-high 27 points in the opening quarter and junior Deon Barfield got off to a fast start with a variety of dunks to get him started on a 17-point effort to keep Cherokee Trail in high gear.
